  1. Type Win + R.
  2. Type REGEDIT in the Run dialog.

  3. Navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

  4. Double-Click on RPEnabled.
  5. Type 0 in the Value data box.

  6. Click OK.
    Disable Metro UI And Get Windows 7 Styled Start Menu Back in Windows 8
  7. Logoff and logon again.

Now Metro UI will be disabled and you will get the good old classic UI. To get Metro UI back just type 1 instead of 0 in Step 4.

    This is welcome info.  Metro is totally unusable for anyone who has more than a few applications installed.

    Install the “preview with apps” and you have a useless start menu. I can understand wanting to be tablet-friendly, but this is an incredible pain to use. Of course, if you disable the Metro interface, all those demo apps also disappear. I consider that no great loss because switching between them seems darn near impossible.
